From September through May, Create Now partnered with Farmdale Elementary to deliver a 29-week Mariachi music education program designed to provide students with an exceptional cultural and musical experience. Funded by the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles, this program brought the rich, multigenerational tradition of Mariachi to life for a new generation of young musicians.
Program Overview
The Mariachi program served up to 27 students, with up to 12 violinists and 15 Armonia (guitar and related rhythm instruments) players, selected through school sign-ups. Instruction was provided once a week for one hour, split between two simultaneous sessions—one for Violin and one for Armonia. As students progressed, both groups united for ensemble practice, preparing them for a live performance as a cohesive group.
The program delivered a total of 58 hours of professional instruction across the academic year, culminating in a final public performance for peers, educators, families, and the local community.

Curriculum Focus
Students learned:
- Instrumental technique in Violin or Armonia
- Fundamental music theory and the ability to read music
- Mariachi-specific performance skills, including musical repertoire and stage presence
- Ensemble etiquette and teamwork, essential for performing live
For many students, this was their first time receiving formal music instruction. The program not only deepened their connection to cultural heritage but also enhanced their confidence, discipline, and collaboration skills.
Final Performance: Mariachi Night at El Sereno Night Market
The program concluded with a community celebration at the El Sereno Night Market on May 14, 2025. Students from Farmdale Elementary performed alongside professional musicians from Mariachi Tapatio de Los Angeles, offering a powerful example of how education, culture, and community can come together.
The event was met with overwhelming support from families, local residents, and cultural partners. It showcased not only the skills the students gained but also the value of accessible arts education in historically underserved neighborhoods.
