Create Now has temporarily stopped our Fashion Design classes at Maryvale in Rosemead and Hillsides in Pasadena (foster group homes) sponsored by the GO Campaign because of Covid-19, but the teenage foster girls living at Maryvale made tremendous progress after just four of our workshops.
This 14-week program, led by Emore’J Lee, focuses on fashion history, the reconstruction and construction of garments, fashion careers, and the “Fast Fashion Crisis.” Our classes teach sketching, pattern-making, sewing, job and team-building skills. Students create their own unique garments and accessories, and learn how to professionally present and market their creations.
Youth discover how fashion can help to save the environment by “upcycling” garments from preexisting clothes to make them into fabulous couture by using beads, lace, ribbons and lots more gorgeous trimmings with the theme of the Four Elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water).
The girls at Maryvale love our teaching artists Megers Frierson, Lashonda, Fabiola Ortega, Lashell and Stela. One girl expressed, “They help us through rough times and when we’re frustrated, they really care about our projects and want us to do the best we can.”
Our Fashion Design program will culminate with a Fashion Show at Hillsides, which our students will help prepare by casting models and assisting with decor.
On Saturday, February 20, 2021, join us for the Create Now Fashion Show at Vortex LA, a 6,000 sq, ft, venue off the 10 freeway just east of DTLA. Sponsorships start at $500. We also seek auction items and additional support. Click here to download the details.
Come meet some of these youth and see their spectacular outfits presented at two different Fashion Shows: (1) from 1:00-3:30pm for a community/ family-oriented event, and (2) from 7:00-9:30pm for those 21+.
